Brevet:
The Baltic Salmon Fund calls for urgent measures to save the unique Baltic salmon stocks
I refer to my letter of 6 May regarding your legal action against Finish salmon fishery and the response from your office.
I certainly appreciated your action. The Council decision on the quotas are however far from saving the Baltic salmon stocks which are in a very dire state. It is not only about the quotas for the wild salmon but also the quotas for herring and sprat which is the main source of feed for the salmon.
We are basing this on the current situation for several of the wild salmon stocks, where for the third year in a row we see very few salmon returning to our rivers. We would like to suggest that the Commission urgently will carry out an impact assessment for emergency measures for the salmon stocks. Such an assessment should include the long term effects if no measures are taken and we lose the unique wild stocks of the Baltic salmon.
We would like to express our gratitude for the opportunity that the Ocean Pact (OP) provides. It is especially important that it includes the upstream-downstream migratory fish where the salmon is a prominent example.
We are collaborating closely with the the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in their assessment and we would be more than happy to provide further information regarding the situation in the Swedish wild salmon rivers.
